"We don't have any beef with William and Kate, we just want the monarchy to stop legislating our country. ... We want democracy," said Sophie Turcot, a member of RRQ.

Protesters were bent on being disruptive by banging loud tin drums.

As protesters chanted "Down with the monarchy!" royal supporters chanted back "Will and Kate!"

"You are ruining this for everyone, toddler flower girl dresses toddler flower girl dresses" Nathalie Petatoukakis said to a protester. "Because of you, we won't see Will and Kate!"

The royal couple entered and exited the hospital so swiftly most people didn't even catch a glimpse of them.

Jean Wynn, a royal enthusiast, had been waiting outside the hospital since 2 p.m. Wynn was draped in a Union Jack flag and waving a William and Kate flag her sister sent for the royal wedding back in April. "I've seen the Queen before in my home town of North Middleton in England. I'll be glad just to see the couple. I hope the protesters don't give them too much trouble," Wynn said.

Zoë Small, an 8-year-old fan of the Duchess of Cambridge, sat comfortably on a blanket on the hospital's front lawn flipping through her princess book and wearing a tiara matched to her favourite dress for the royal couple's visit. "I think princess Kate is very pretty ... she must get new outfits every day. If I was princess, I would eat fancy foods all the time wedding dresses in ," Small said.

Decked out in a T-shirt with a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on it wedding dresses wedding dresses, a cowboy hat with the royal crest and with matching belt buckle, Gary Sims, a member of the Monarchist League, waved a flag of William and Kate. "I went to go see them in Ottawa yesterday," he said. "I was amazed at the way they handled the crowd. ... I also went to London back in April to see the wedding."

The couple visited the renowned pediatric hospital as one of two stops on the Montreal portion of their tour of Canada. The other was at the Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec, where the couple had dinner.
